Lenza Optometrist: Allecia Shoemaker O.D.

High Standard of Care

Dr. Allecia Shoemaker was raised on a family farm in Glyndon, Minnesota. Having received the Wilson Scholarship in recognition of academic achievement and community service, she attended Jamestown University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a biology degree. She then went on to receive her doctorate with honors at Pacific University College of Optometry.

During this time she was the secretary of Beta Sigma Kappa and she received the COVD Excellence in Vision Therapy award. Her externships provided advanced training in pediatrics, strabismus, vision therapy, neuro-optometric rehabilitation, contact lenses and ocular disease.

Dr. Shoemaker is married and has two sons who she enjoys chasing around their hobby farm. They enjoy a long day playing in the sand at the coast or in the snow on Mt. Hood.

Orthokeratology Specialist

Dr. Shoemaker is an Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) specialist. Ortho-K is a treatment that uses special contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea (the front surface of the eye) while you sleep at night. This is a non-surgical option that helps correct nearsightedness (myopia) without the daytime use of glasses or contacts. When the Ortho-K lenses are removed in the morning, distant objects come back into focus and the patient can see clearly without wearing glasses or contacts during the day. Ortho-K treatment can be used for both adults and children.

Myopia has increased by 66% in the United States since 1971, and onset can begin as early as age 6. Genetics is the primary cause of myopia, but lifestyle also plays a role, such as frequently performing detailed or up-close work, or regularly using computers, tablets, and cell phones. For those with myopia, their distance vision is blurry. When left undiagnosed and untreated, myopia can cause issues such as headaches, difficulty driving, and feeling fatigued. Later in life, untreated myopia can lead to the earlier development of cataracts, a higher probability of developing glaucoma, and an increased risk of retinal detachment.
