Children’s Eye Exams in Wilsonville, OR

Children’s Exams Require Special Skills

Children have special needs because they are not always able to verbalize or fully describe their visual complaints. Also, children’s eye prescriptions are continuously changing because the shape of the eye continues to change as they grow. For that reason, our eye doctors take extra care with their eye exams.

Children, especially preschoolers, can sometimes develop stranger anxiety. Your eye doctor understands the special relationship between herself and your child. Our optometrist is approachable and comforting, and that will make your child feel more comfortable with his or her eye exam.

Dilated Exam and Refraction

Children have the ability to accommodate through prescriptions. That is why your eye doctor will perform a dilated refraction. Children take longer to dilate than adults, so you can expect your child’s exam to take about 60 to 90 minutes due to the slow dilation.

Symptoms of Blurry Vision in Children

Because children are not always able to verbalize their complaints, parents and their eye doctor will have to pay special attention to symptoms of blurry vision. These include:

  • Crossing of eyes
  • Sudden low performance in school
  • Unexplained headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Rubbing of the eyes
  • Squinting when focusing at a distance
  • Inability to read the blackboard
