What Is the Difference Between a Vision Plan Exam and a Medical Insurance Exam?

Vision plan exams are used to screen for eye conditions. Generally they are for patients without vision-threatening eye problems, such as exams for glasses and contact lenses.

If you are experiencing eye pain, red eyes, or sudden blurry vision, you will be seen for a medical exam. .

Medical eye exams are for patients who are experiencing symptoms or who have systemic health conditions such as diabetes. These exams are more involved, requiring communication with your primary care doctor and/or subspecialists. Medical eye exams allow for multiple visits and diagnostic testing but generally do not cover refractions for glasses or contact lens prescriptions.
